The man i love is a lebanese shia muslim?

he is a good kind man, who like many others saw some horrible things in the war there. my family and friends are warning me to be careful of him, based solely on what they read in newspapers. please advise me, coz this is really getting to me now. They learn of his faith and immediatley want to drag me away...plz help !!!!
